In the United States of America an interesting new programme started recently, entitled ‘Genetics in Literature, Film, and Popular Culture.’
Prof. Jay Clayton (Nashville, TN), and prof. Priscilla Wald (Duke University, Durham, NC) are coordinating the programme. The specific aims are:
- To identify and classify the body of literary and popular texts concerning genetics, from the beginning of the twentieth century to the present;
- To compose critical assessments of these works;
- To gauge the accuracy of their representations of genetics;
- To discuss the social and ethical issues these works raise;
- To trace the history and nature of their influences on public understandings of genetics.
A first workshop will be held in Nashville on 7 and 8 november. Frans Meulenberg will attend this workshop, as a representative of the European project.
